C is for ...

Cougars!

Yes, there are  cougars in them woods! Back when Europeans began settling Utah in 1857, they started hunting  cougars down since all the way to 1966--they were  considered vermin.

They live throughout the entire state of Utah. You might be lucky enough to see one while hiking through the surrounding forests, but never do it alone. It makes me shudder to think that these big  cats roam so  close to home as well as bears.

What kind of dangerous  creatures live in your state?

  1. I have always thought cougars the most beautiful of all cats. Long may they live.
That such large predators can survive in 2012 without being hunted to extinction amazes me. Thanks for the gorgeous photo.

  2. It is great to know that they still live in the wild. The only wild thing we have around here are snakes.

  3. Beautiful cats! There are Mountain Lions here in California too, though I've never seen one in the wild myself, they're not too rarely seen. Bears of course, but strangely enough the most dangerous animal is probably deer. More people get killed or injured by deer every year than by any of the predator type animals. You wouldn't think so, but deer seem to be more dangerous.

  4. We have wild Coyotes but they're more annoying than dangerous really - getting into the trash and things like that. We also have a lot of hawks. I see them almost every day. Lost of wild critters here but most are not dangerous. In fact, I think the insects are more dangerous than the animals. Last summer I got bit by a horse fly on my earlobe and it swelled up double the size.

We do have snapping turtles which can bite off a finger or toe but they keep to themselves usually. :)

  6. Does the Skunk Ape count as a dangerous creature? If not, I guess I'll go with rattlesnakes, brown recluses and alligators!

  12. Hi, Elizabeth! Glad to see Darkspell doing so well--woo hoo! Very cool post, cougars. Whenever I watch Bruno Mars perform and do-wop across the stage, I feel a little bit "cougar-ish." Seriously, my husband makes fun of me.

As for our state of Louisiana... hello! We, like, have alligators walking across the streets here! *smile*

  15. Although cougars are not native to the Indiana region, one escaped from a wild cat rescue place. It was pregnant and now there have been sightings of a cougar family around my town.

I have an award for you on my blog.

  16. I grew up in Pennsylvania and the pride of our area is elk. In fact, I am writing about elk in a book I am working on now. In Native American tradition elk are the protectors of women and the symbol of true love so it working well with my story.

  17. I live in WV where it is legal to own big cats (although I wouldn't) Actually the crazy law states "one may not walk a Lion, Tiger or Leopard, even if it’s on a leash" I think thats why they put the Wild in Wild Wonderful WV :)

  20. My husband! No, seriously...all politicians!!! No...we don't have any here in Portugal. A snake slithered in front of my foot the other day on a nature trail, but we don't have any poisonous ones. Pretty passive really. Oh! There is an Iberian lynx but it's endangered :-( (so you never see one)

  23. Cougars are gorgeous, but scary up close. Dangerous critters here in NYC? Um, rats, roaches and nutty folks. In the Catskills? Lots of brown bears, and one time a coyote came up super-close to me. I was afraid that he might have rabies. But he trotted away after a staring contest.

  24. I live in Alberta and we have cougars too (and unfortunately it seems like every other year someone gets fatally attacked by them) as well as coyotes, bears and all sorts of other less-toothy just just as deadly critters. Happily, however, unlike Catherine Stine, we don't have rats (or at least not enough to count) *shudders* Man I hate rats...

  32. New Follower from the A to Z. I live north of LA in cougar country. One morning I was golfing at the crack of dawn and a cougar came loping down the fairway. Beautiful and terrifying.

  33. Wow! I'm learning so much about Utah already! Great idea for the A to Z challenge! We're in Arizona, by the way, and have all sorts of dangerous critters here... including Cougars, too! Outside the zoo, though, I've never seen one in person.

  34. Gorgeous looking animals! I love any from the feline family, domestic or otherwise.
What dangerous animals in my area? Well, I live in Greece and there are wolves in the woods in Northern Greece - but frankly sometimes the most dangerous are some of the human kind!
