The Princess and the Sorceress. My review!

Nothing is coincidental. Not when you have a handful of helpful fairies, and one sorceress bent on vengeance! Jenny finds herself whisked back into the future just as she’s about to kiss the groom.  Genevieve finds herself longing for modern conveniences as she switches places as well. But there is more to this tale than time swapping.

This book does not read as a standalone; it is a direct continuation from the first book (The Princess and the Prom Queen). Though the plot is well executed, I found the characters’ adjustment period to their time swapping unbelievable. They adjust without much difficulty and, again, I like to be convinced by showing, not telling. That’s just me.

There is a dragon in here! Though I enjoyed his debut, I wish Weist gave him a more in depth part—he is a very promising character. Same with the sorceress’s daughter. When Weist introduced the sorceress’s daughter and how the sorceress was using her as part of her evil plot, I thought, “ooh, more characters mean more complications. More complications mean a fast paced read.” For a moment, I believed the daughter was the key to something bigger. Sadly, the daughter is only a tiny mention.

This story is as charming as the first. I recommend it to anyone who is looking to read a clean, fun, fairytale adventure!

The publisher provided an electronic copy for an honest review.

Jaclyn is an Idaho farm girl who grew up loving to read. She developed a love for writing as a senior in high school, when her dad jokingly said she was the next Dr. Seuss (not even close, but very sweet). She met her husband, Steve, at BYU, and they have six happy, crazy children who encourage her to keep writing. After owning a bookstore and running away to have adventures in Australia, they settled back down in their home in Utah. Jaclyn now spends her days herding her kids to various activities and trying to remember what she was supposed to do next. Her books include Ring of Truth; A Christmas Worth Billions, Fashioned for Love; Endless: A Modern Cinderella Tale; The Princess and the Prom Queen; Magicians of the Deep; the Luck series--Stolen Luck, Twist of Luck, Best of Luck, More Than Just Luck, No Such Luck, and Just My Luck, a novella.

My Thoughts for Jaclyn Weist's Princess and the Prom Queen

Not your ordinary Sleeping Beauty! This fun tale will knock your socks off and keep you guessing as Weist has thrown fun elements into the mix.

Modern day Jenny doesn’t care for math. She hates volleyball. She doesn’t know how to paint. Medieval Genevieve finds being a princess as mundane and she snubs every available suitor. That is, until the dark fairy’s curse backfires and both girls switch time periods!

I enjoyed how Weist threw in twists—darker magic than the wicked fairy’s. The writing is light and easy. Fun. However, I found that the believability was difficult to accept in many places (though I know fairies don’t exist, but an author can convince they do, right?), especially when the servant whole-heartedly accepted Jenny’s story of being from the future. Same with Genevieve when she awakened in the future; her parents didn’t bat a lash at her tale, either. I suppose this is for time constraints? Because of these factors (along with similar ones), I would say this read is for a younger audience, not the more critical older groups (unless you love whatever is thrown your way no matter how whimsical).

Though I am a stickler for these types of things, I rather enjoyed the book. I definitely recommend this fun, light read to anyone seeking romantic adventure!

Missing Author

I want to get back into authoring myself! I feel like I've missed so much, I've fallen off the train and I feel like I need to find myself a fast horse to catch up. Like a renegade from the Old West, I need to jump from the speeding horse onto the hurtling train. I miss the published world!

How do you get back on your horse?

Spotlight: Daughter of Winter by Amber Argyle

Daughter of Winter

Daughter of Winter will be released April 21st. Here's the new synopsis:

Bargains. Only the truly desperate make them. Only the truly desperate need them. And always, the desperate pay.

The silence and never-ending dark of winter are all Elice has ever known, for she is the daughter of the Winter Queen. Isolated in a northern queendom with only the seals for company, she dreams of color and music and life. So when a whaling ship crashes just offshore, she doesn't hesitate to rescue the lone survivor, Adar, who quickly becomes her friend. She must keep him hidden from her mother at all costs, for if the Winter Queen discovers him trespassing, she'll kill him.

But when her mother reveals just how dark her soul has become, Elice realizes she is as much a prisoner as Adar. To ever know true freedom—ever to become the woman she was meant to be—she must flee with him. But in their flight, she begins to see hints of something more nefarious. The darkness that has taken hold of her mother is spreading, staining the world with its influence.

Unbeknownst to Elice, a bargain was made long ago. A bargain she was born to fulfill.

Janette Rallison's The Girl Who Heard Demons #BookTour

Welcome to my home, the humble blog of Elizabeth Mueller! I am a homeschooling mother of five children ranging from the ages of 19 all the way to 3. When I saw that Janette Rallison was holding a book tour, my heart stopped. Though my time is riddled with the pidder padding of little feet and incessant voices fringed with high demands, I knew I could make time for Rallison; she is one of my most favorite authors! I knew I just had to get my hands on this book and share my eager thoughts.

*The Girl Who Heard Demons.

Imagine if you could hear demons. What would they say? What secrets would they hold? They slither and hiss and writhe about their victims, like a noxious cloud of leaking riddles. Never had they shared an omen, especially of their prey’s impending doom.

Adelle Hansen is an ordinary girl who bears an extraordinary gift. She can hear demons. Though this bane has been a part of most of her life, she suddenly pays particular attention when she overhears one celebrating the imminent demise of popular quarterback, Levi Anderson.

As I opened the book, I knew it would be a good one. I did wonder how Janette would execute a girl hearing demons, though. I imagined something along your paranormal romance, you know: demons and witches and vampires, oh my!

Was I wrong on that count.

She weaves a fascinating and intricate plot of intrigue, lies, and betrayal that Adelle must unravel—a race against unbelievers to save Levi’s life when it seems everything works against her.

I am impressed with how Janette spins the story. The pacing is steady; nary a dull moment as there is a surprise at every corner. The characterization is candid and impressive, the romance, swoon-worthy at best.

As cheesy as this sounds, I have a special bookshelf in my heart for Janette Rallison novels.
